Getting Rid of Acne
Sometimes, even though we do the necessary things to avoid getting acne, we still get it. Then the question arrises, what treatments work best for getting rid of acne?
There are different treatments that aid most in getting rid of acne, depending on its severity. Some mild acne can be easily healed by over-the-counter products while some would require the consultation to a dermatologist. Before using any product, it is important to know first the right treatment for a particular type of acne.
Do not think that getting rid of acne is impossible. Acne treatments range from topical treatments, oral treatments, to surgical treatments.
Topical treatments include Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic acid, Retinoids, Azelaic Acid (Azelex cream), and Topical Antibiotics (Clindamycin and Erythromycin). Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic that kills the bacteria that causes acne infection. Salicylic acid reduces the shedding of follicle and sebaceous gland cells. Topical medicine is usually recommended to those with mild acne conditions and it is applied directly to pimples or acne lesions or to the entire affected area. For more moderate cases of acne, topical medicines containing antibiotics are often used.
Oral treatments include Oral Antibiotics (tetracycline, erythromycin), and Hormone-related Therapy (the Pill), Accutane (Isotretinoin). For those with severe forms of acne, oral antibiotics are usually prescribed by doctors. Antibiotics and azelaic acid are used in getting rid of bacteria and reducing inflammation.
Some acne problems in women are caused by hormonal changes. For this particular condition, doctors may prescribe specific drugs to either reduce the androgens being produced by the ovaries or to suppress the production of androgens by the adrenal glands.
Surgery is yet another route that many choose on their journey to getting rid of acne. Surgical acne treatments include Collagen injection, Dermabrasion, Laser Treatment, Microdermabrasion, and Subcision.
